Authorities confirmed on Tuesday the death of the pilot and former rebel Óscar Pérez, who was known as the Venezuelan Rambo, in a confrontation with the national police that has raised doubts if he was executed after trying to surrender.

Members of the militarized police had located Pérez and his group of collaborators in a house in the El Junquito sector, northwest of Caracas, and opened fire on the property with rifles and grenade launchers, according to various media.

During the siege, the former inspector of an elite police force shared several videos in which he bloodied the allegation that some of them had been injured and that the authorities had not followed his offers to surrender in exchange for a ceasefire.

The Venezuelan Interior Minister, Néstor Reverol, was in charge of confirming at a press conference the death of Pérez and six of his colleagues, whom he accused of forming a terrorist cell.

The former rebel agent rose to fame last June when, amid the massive protests against President Nicolás Maduro, he captured a police helicopter and threw several grenades at the headquarters of the Supreme Court and the Interior Ministry.

From that day on, he became the number one target of the Chavista security forces, which until now had not been able to locate him.

With 15 years of experience and after starring in some action movies, the green-eyed policeman compared himself to film characters like Rambo or James Bond.

The broadcast of the videos in which he claims that the authorities ignored his requests to surrender have generated accusations of murder against the Venezuelan government, which is accused of executing the former agent.

His fate is also compared to that of Hugo Chávez after leading a bloody coup in 1992. The then lieutenant colonel was allowed to surrender and after a few years in prison he was granted amnesty.
