Singer Camila Cabello has apologized for racist expressions she posted on her Tumblr account when she was around 15 years old.
The singer used her Twitter account to explain what happened and apologize for making fun of African-American, Asian and Mexican people, and making fun of great colleagues like Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Bruno Mars, among others.
“When I was younger, I used language that I am deeply ashamed of and will regret forever. I was not educated and [was] ignorant, and every time I realized the history and weight and true meaning of this horrible and hurtful language, I was deeply ashamed to have used it. I apologized back then and I apologize now again, "wrote the singer. “I would never intentionally hurt someone and I repent from the bottom of my heart. As much as I wanted to, I can't turn back time and change the things I said in the past. But every time you know better, you do the best and that's all I can do."
The singer's apology has her fans divided. Some who do not identify with the groups criticized by the artist have accepted her apology, while for others her comments when she started the group Fifth Harmony - of which she was a part - her mea culpa was not enough.
The posts that sparked the controversy and were exposed by a supposed fan of the interpreter who was born in Cuba, include offensive images with references to the African American community, the KFC fast food chain that sells fried chicken and the consumption of watermelon.
In the posts, which have gone viral, the artist scoffs at the domestic violence incident between Rihanna and her ex-partner, Chris Brown; she also accuses Swift of mocking women; and scoffs at controversial rapper Nicki Minaj.
“Now I am 22 years old, I am an adult and I have grown and learned and I am aware of the history and pain that it brings in a way that it was not before. Those mistakes do not represent the person I am or have been. I only fight for love and inclusiveness and my heart has never, even back then, had an ounce of hatred or division. The reality is that I was embarrassingly ignorant and unconscious,”Cabello wrote on her Twitter account.
The singer assured that she has used her platform as an artist to talk about equality and injustices, and that she will continue to do so as before.
“I can't say enough about how sorry I am and how deeply embarrassed I feel. I apologize again from the bottom of my heart, he concluded.
