The Mexican vlogger and YouTuber Yuya, is in the midst of a tremendous scandal after many of the users of social networks complained that she is using the designs of the Tenagos from Hidalgo in her products, without her permission.
According to the newspaper El Universal, the accusations against Yuya, whose real name is Mariand Castrejon Castañeda, were unleashed in October when she shared some products from her new line of cosmetics on her Instagram account.
In addition to the traditional Tenangos, the fashion influencer is also accused of employing designs typical of popular Mexican iconography such as the traditional Quereta dolls, lottery cards and the popular skulls in his products.
Seeing the image of his new products on his Instagram page, someone identified as badmary.or wrote this answer: "Plagiarism". Later, in a different message, he added: "It would be nice if I gave credit to Mexican artisans, right?" Others, also angry, began to call her "Lady plagiarism", while her most loyal fans defended her, explaining that, being Mexican, it was only natural that she be inspired by designs from her culture.
Recently, many Mexicans have been complaining about the use and commercialization of artisan designs from their country, especially from the Tenagos de Hidalgo. Among the companies accused of having done this are the Spanish firm Mango and the Swiss Nestlé.
In the YouTuber case, lawyers have advised him not to issue a statement on this case at this time.
According to El Universa l, the Tenangos have a registration before the National Institute of Copyright; and in ethical terms, the use of Mexican designs is allowed under the reservation of not being attributed as their own or used for commercial purposes.
