The new year began in Peru with the death of dozens of passengers on a bus in what is considered one of the most catastrophic accidents in the history of that country, and although at first it had been said that there were about forty deaths, the Authorities have just announced that that number has risen to 51.

The sad incident happened on Tuesday after a bus fell 100 meters down a cliff after colliding with a truck on the well-known Devil's Bend, in the Serpentín de Pasamayo, about 18 kms north of Lima.

According to local media, the accident occurred when an inter-provincial bus, carrying 56 passengers, was traveling with excess speed at kilometer 75 of that highway, also known as the Panamericana Norte. Suddenly, the driver tried to evaluate a trailer that was on the road, and he left the track, then plummeting into the abyss.

Some media have transmitted Dantesque images of this incident, in which the corpses were scattered on the rocks of the abyss, every time the bus was left with the tires up at the bottom of it.

A representative of the transport company told the media that the bus was transporting passengers from Huacho to Lima and was scheduled to arrive around 2:00 pm. In addition, he explained that the bus driver had at least 8 years of experience working as a driver for that company.

Authorities say they are studying the causes of the terrible incident, but they do not rule out that the speed at which the bus was traveling was an important factor.

The number of families affected by this tragedy has led even the President of Peru to send a tweet expressing their deepest condolences.
