A Wisconsin mother faces second-degree charges of reckless and dangerous conduct after police learned she tied her son to the roof of her minivan.

The boy's mother, Amber Schmunk, 28, admitted to tying up her 9-year-old boy to help her transport a plastic pool that did not fit inside the vehicle. The child's role was to "hold" the pool so that it would not fall down on the way home.

As reported by the local Fox affiliate, on Saturday afternoon police in Saukville, a small town more than an hour's drive from Madison, received a call reporting that a minor had been seen traveling on top of A car.

When he had advanced a certain distance, the mother finally stopped and lowered the boy from the roof of his car, doubled the pool and put it in the vehicle. Then she continued driving until she reached her sister's house, where the police found her.

When questioned by the authorities, the woman reportedly believed that what she did was okay because her father "allowed her to do things like that at that age."

A witness to the incident, Barbara Sellin, said that as a grandmother she knows that children have to go inside the vehicle with their belts on. "That is common sense. You love your children and take care of them. " But putting a child on the roof of the car is beyond ridiculous."

Schmunk's first hearing in front of the judge will be on November 14. If found guilty, she could spend up to 10 years behind bars.
