Neither the Novi, Michigan police believed the unusualness of this dispute: some mothers fought and shook each other by a notebook and, when the fight did not stop, one of them took out her pistol to threaten the the rest.

As reported by the Fox affiliate, the unprecedented brawl happened in a Walmart store in that city, about 40 km from Detroit on Monday afternoon. "It was in the back, in the school supplies section," said Scott Baetens, sergeant of the Novi Police Department, while saying it was "regrettable" that all of this was unleashed by "a notepad."

Police officials say two women from Farmington Hills, one 32 and the other 46 years old, were inside that shopping center buying school supplies, which also included a 20-year-old woman and her 51-year-old mother. There was only one last notepad left, and instead of calling the store clerk to see if there were more, two of the women began to scramble for it.

As neither of the two women's teams wanted to budge, the women of Farmington Hills began pulling the youngest shopper by the hair. Her mother tried to defend her, but as she was pushed out, she pulled out a gun. Then the other shoppers who had been watching this scene ran out and chaos ensued in the store.

Baetens commented that the woman, whose name has not been released, had permission to carry the weapon. "She took out her firearm and while pointing it at them told them to stop attacking her daughter."

As investigators try to get the surveillance video to see exactly what happened and if any charges will be brought against them, Beatens said: "It was a senseless act of violence from the beginning."
