Dylan Roof, the murderer of the Charleston church, has asked to defend himself in his bid to avoid the death penalty. The 22-year-old white supremacist has been convicted of the deaths of nine African-American parishioners, whom he shot in June 2015 at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.
His lawyers tried to prove that the massacre was caused by the boy's mental illness, but this argument was not accepted. Now he himself wants to legally represent himself in the phase of the judicial process in which the sentence is established. On his website Last Rhodesian posted photos with the Confederate flag and racist comments. “Blacks have lower IQs, less impulse control, and higher testosterone levels overall. These three things are only a recipe for violent behavior, he said. He also spoke offensively of Jews and Hispanics.
In the first part of the trial, Roof was already found guilty of these nine deaths, of illegal possession of weapons and other hate crimes. Roof will spend the rest of his days in jail if the jury acquits him of capital punishment.
