Charlie Gard, the baby born in England who suffered from a rare genetic disease and whose case shocked the world, died this Friday within a week of reaching his first year of life.

"Our beautiful little boy is gone, we are very proud of you, Charlie," said his family in a statement. The baby breathed his last at a hospice located in west London, where he was accompanied by his parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates.

Charlie had been taken to that place after a judge ruled on June 27 that the boy remain in his hometown because a series of tests had determined that he no longer had a chance to improve.

The baby suffered from a rare genetic condition called Mitochondrial DNA Reduction Syndrome that causes progressive muscle weakness and brain damage. Charlie was hooked up to machines that kept him alive and was unable to move, eat, or breathe without assistance.

The drama of the minor was accentuated after the legal battle that broke out between the parents and a British high court where a permission was disputed for the parents to take the child to the United States for experimental treatment.

According to People magazine, the boy's parents had asked a court in England for authorization to take their son to the United States to receive alternative treatment that had been proposed by a doctor who knew the case. However, the Family Division of the Superior Court in London ruled in April that medical experimentation was "not in Charlie's best interest."

The parents then appealed to the European Court of Human Rights to appeal the case. However, said body joined the dictates of the local court. "Undergoing experimental treatment does not show successful prospects," it was said in a resolution issued on July 27. "[The treatment] shows no benefit and would continue to harm him."
