A 26-day-old baby died after being assaulted by one of his family's dogs. Authorities in Lafayette, Indiana are investigating the case. Officers arrived at the home where the boy - identified as Julian Connell - was attacked by his pet on Saturday morning. Officers had to shoot the dog - a mixed pit bull - because he was still on top of the injured baby.
Lafayette police said in a statement that Officer Neil Cain had to shoot the dog to death to assist the baby, who was fighting for his life. The boy was transported in an emergency to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to the police report, the baby's teenage brother was the one who called 911 around 11:30 a.m. to report that the dog had attacked the baby. Julian's mother was in the house when the incident happened.
"Before attacking the baby, the pit bull mix was fighting with a beagle mix dog in the house," the police statement said. The beagle was taken to an animal hospital to treat his wounds. According to police, the teenage brother separated the two fighting dogs, and the mixed-breed pit bull dog attacked the baby. The medical examiner determined that the baby died of wounds to his head and neck caused by the dog's bites. Rest in peace.
