A college student was unable to make it to graduation Tuesday because of a long delay on the New York subway that left him trapped for several hours in a convoy between stations.

Unable to do anything else while waiting for the train to move, the passengers of the car organized a special ceremony for Jerich Marco Alcántara, who was dressed in his gown and mortarboard to graduate nursing from Hunter Bellevue College.

Seeing him so frustrated and sad, his hardship companions decided that the young man could not be spoiled on such a significant day. To ease his grief, a friend gave him a virtual diploma via his cell phone and someone on the train put on the song "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" by the band Green Day, a classic graduation anthem.

One of the passengers, Nadiya Afzal, recorded the moment and shared a video on her Facebook account, which has already gone viral. "Poor boy, he couldn't make it to graduation because of the subway delay this morning … so we arranged a graduation for him on the train," he wrote.

Then the young man shared that virtual diploma with the passengers as a memento of that memorable day.

"If you want a copy of my diploma, turn on your AirDrop [application]," Alcántara said in the video, who later warned New York magazine that he assured that everything that happened was spontaneous.

When they finally reached the desired station, the young man ran to the university, but realized that there were already other students leaving the graduation. It was too late.

Despite the displeasure of missing the official ceremony, the party on the delayed E train is sure to be just as memorable. "We had a great time," said the honoree.
