Although authorities say that the death of former New England Patriots player Aarón Hernández is due to suicide, his lawyer points out that the death of his client could be murder.

According to TMZ, lawyer José Baez has asked on behalf of his client's family for an investigation into the facts surrounding the death of the athlete, who was found alive in his cell in a Massachusetts prison in the early hours of Wednesday.

Hernández's relatives do not believe that the former NFL player was able to commit suicide, especially a few days after he was found not guilty of two other murders.

Baez assured that, despite serving a life sentence, Hernández looked to the future with optimism.

The family, the lawyer said, is "desolate" and their suspicions focus on what is now suspected of the other inmates and even the prison guards.

Hernández was found hanged in his cell in the Souza-Baranowski prison, considered one of the safest and most sophisticated in the country, in which hundreds of security cameras monitor prisoners day and night.

"Mr. Hernández hung himself using a sheet that he tied to the window of his cell," a prison spokesman said in a statement. "He also tried to block his door from the inside, jamming it with various objects."

Hernández was found at 3:05 am and was pronounced dead at 4:07 at a nearby hospital.

Authorities, he said, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and will now have to review the camera's security recordings to try to determine what happened.
