Three years after the death of the Venezuelan actress and beauty queen Mónica Spear, her father Rafael Spear recounts the mourning the family has undergone. Monica was murdered on January 6, 2014, a few hours before the birthday of her father and brother Javier Spear, who meet on January 7.
"We always remember the dates, especially the day of his tragedy, it was my birthday, the day of my son's birthday, too, Javier's," says Rafael. “Therefore as much as we try to celebrate the birthday together it is a date that is very painful. I always try in some way to show people that."
The Spear house in Orlando, FL, where they exclusively hosted People en Español, is filled with the actress' belongings such as her paintings, furniture, and sculptures that the family brought from Monica's apartment in Venezuela. Even her mother keeps the actress's suitcases full of clothes and shoes that her daughter Maya will inherit one day.
“Time has been an ally. The pain does not pass, the pain is always there, yet one has to somehow move on. I am not used to the fact of not having it here, it has been a very big loss. Time helps heal wounds, adds the father.
Her granddaughter Maya has been her best teacher. "She is a very intelligent girl, very mature, stronger than an adult," continues Rafael. “She has taught me to try not to externalize the pain and tragedy we have been through. She has told me on many occasions: 'Look grandpa, I don't cry because I don't want you to cry.' That shows me of Maya's strength. She is very adult despite her 8 years.”
He and his wife Inge Mootz Spear are raising the girl and supporting her to develop her full potential. “I have always told Maya that her parents are unfortunately not here on earth, that they are in heaven, and that someday in the very distant future, they will be together with her. To remember that she is here because I am sure that life has an important role in store for her and that she must take this into account,”he concludes.
