María Celeste Arrarás responded this Wednesday to harsh criticism and calls for a boycott of the new series based on her book on the death of Selena with a firm defense of her work, which she said she carried out "with elegance and respect."

In an extensive statement on Facebook, the Puerto Rican journalist highlighted the rigor of the book El secretro de Selena that she wrote in 1997 about the life and murder of the Texan star, which will now be transferred to the small screen through a miniseries produced by a Disney and Telemundo agreement.

"That boycott is based on the erroneous premise that I wrote the book based on the testimony of the murderer Yolanda Saldívar and that I did it to earn money by exploiting the memory of dear Selena," Arrarás warns in the text. "That is completely false."

He assures that the best proof is that Saldívar herself, who was the president of the artist's fan club and was found guilty of her murder in 1995, was "enraged" by the content of the book, "which betrays her as the person who lied and manipulated Selena to her last breath."

He also highlights that he has never taken a penny for the book, since he donated all his earnings, and that everything he wrote was the product of exhaustive research. "So no one has ever been able to sue."

Arrarás did not directly address in his statement the harsh words of condemnation that Suzette Quintanilla, Selena's sister, has addressed to her, who through networks has denounced the new series and has echoed the criticism of a sector of fans.

Of course, the presenter of Al Rojo Vivo (Telemundo) asked the followers of the late singer, who do not forget her, to "not be blinded" and stressed that she has "a clear conscience".

“I wrote the book with the intention of providing a complete picture of what Selena lived to you, her millions of fans. There is not a single page that disrespects or stains its name”, she stresses. "Whoever says otherwise has another agenda and does not do it with the best of intentions."

This is not the first time that a series about the late Tex-Mex star has sparked controversy. Selena's father, Abraham Quintanilla, sued the widower of his son, Chris Pérez, last December for his interest in bringing his book Para Selena, with love to the small screen.
