The famous and award-winning journalist María Hinojosa premieres as an actress in the Lin-Manuel film Miranda In The Heights. He also exclusively revealed to us today the cover of his new book: Once I was you, A Memoir of Love and Hate in a Torn America . (It was you once: My life between love and hate in the United States).
In a phone conversation with People in Spanish, María Hinojosa confessed that becoming an actress in the In The Heights movie was a dream come true thanks to the author of the play, Quiara Alegría Hudes. "I once told her as friends that my dream was to be an actress and what was my surprise when one day the script came to me and offered me a role!"
The journalist told us how she took advantage of that moment to teach her children a lesson: " Never lose hope, if you have an idea, continue working like ants, because you never know how or where it can come true."
Lin-Manuel Miranda shared these words of admiration for the work of his dear friend, host of NPR's Latino USA, in whose book he talks about his experiences as an immigrant through the years:
“Maria's perspective is vital and powerful. Years ago, when In The Heights was just beginning to emerge on Broadway, she made sure that our Latino community supported us. María always celebrated our triumphs, criticized our detractors and has been a benchmark for finding solutions to the problems facing our society. If Maria speaks, there is no other choice but to listen and learn from her”.
We ask Maria to share with us a tip for immigrants from the United States in these times of coronavirus that we are living: “In my work what I find with many of the immigrants is that they say, I have survived so long that a virus did not going to knock down. It is true that immigrants are much stronger than anyone can imagine, but what I ask of them is that they take hold of that immense strength and understand that this virus is one of the bad guys and can knock you down.”
And when asked what are the reasons why, in his opinion, we need to read his book, this was his response: Some friends have told me, how nice you opened your heart and showed how beautiful and ugly you have come to where did you get! But what they tell me later is that with this book they feel armed with information to have a conversation, even a debate, about the politics around immigrants in this country. It is a book that will give you that protein and those vegetables you need, but wrapped in a tasty mole. Following my own experiences, my intention is to show the history of this country to have the intellectual and historical weapons to change it: that we are the generation that takes this information and we can change this country forever ”.
It already convinced us! And you? Do you dare to read it?
