All children are mischievous and seek to explore the world with its innocent occurrences. But when a 6-year-old girl from California tried to do a pirouette and couldn't move anymore, her mother knew immediately that something was very, very wrong.
That's what happened to little Eden Hoelscher, a Palos Verdes resident. More than two years ago, on December 23, she wanted to do a back turn in her living room. The abrupt movement left her lying on the floor and unable to move her legs.
It was her mother, Kylee Hoelscher, who found her without moving from the waist down.
At the local hospital they found that the pirouette had hyperextended part of his spinal cord and this had caused an injury.
What followed in little Eden's life was a relentless struggle to recover through harsh therapy and visits to doctors, which tested the girl's tenacity and encouragement.
So the little girl's parents decided to pack suitcases and move the whole family, including Eden's little sister, Isabella, 9, to Louisville, Kentucky, to get treatment from the prestigious Frazier Rehabilitation Institute specialized in difficult physical therapies.
"She has made a surprising recovery," the girl's mother told People, who has documented her progress on Facebook.
In July of this year, the family witnessed a true miracle: Eden began to take steps during a family visit to California.
Since then progress has been sustained and has allowed Eden to return to school after having to study with a private tutor.
Despite the good news, there is still a long way to go. "He does have very difficult days, when he says to me: 'Mommy, am I going to get better someday?'" Said the mother.
"Then I make him watch his own videos and say 'What do you think?'" He continued. "She looked at me and said 'Yes, I'm going to get it.'"
