The weekend of his bachelor party was supposed to be a joyous one for Brett Greenhill, but it wasn't. The 39-year-old American was paralyzed after having an accident while swimming on the beach. The tragic icident occurred on December 2 after playing soccer with his friends in the arena as part of the celebration in Naples, Florida, where the mother of the bride lives.
His fiancé Meg Alexander, 29, was also celebrating his bachelorette party there, as the couple decided to party together with mutual friends before getting married in February. "We can overcome this," she says, who was as surprised as he was at what happened.
Alexander's mother called 911 after her friends noticed that he was floating and moving in the water in a strange way. Once they pulled him out of the sea and laid them on the sand, Greenhill looked at his fiancée and said, “I can't feel a thing, Meg. I love you so much and I am so sorry,”she recalls.
Alexander replied: “I love you. Do not be sad. We are going to find out what is happening to you.” Paramedics arrived and Greenhill was flown by helicopter to the Fort Myers hospital, where they noticed he was paralyzed from the neck down after hitting his head with a sandbar. The doctors told her that her future husband has only a 1% chance of regaining his mobility.
"We're holding on to that 1% because if anyone can do it, that's Brett," she says. "She is the most tenacious person you can imagine."
The couple met in 2014 at the pool of their apartment complex. They shared tastes like running and he proposed to her after running together one day. They were both excited to spend their honeymoon in New Zealand.
At the moment Greenhill is still in intensive care and still cannot speak. The wedding has been postponed for now but Alexander says she will fight for her marriage. Obviously this situation is very challenging, but together we can overcome it. I know we can”, assures the future girlfriend.
