How did your passion for fashion start?
When I was 6 years old I went with my mother to Paris and we visited the original Chanel store on Rue Cambon. Back then the store was also Mademoiselle Chanel's house, a very magical place. I told my mother that I wanted to live like this, in a house with my store. She laughed, but actually sixteen years later I opened my first fashion store, Cabus, in Caracas, with my house and with Chanel clothes.
You are Venezuelan, how do you think being a Latina has influenced your career?
I have a wonderful Latin mix. My mother is Cuban and my Spanish father […] met in Canada and settled in Venezuela. I think this heritage has given me a sense of individuality and not being afraid to strain, experiment, and survive. My Latinity has also given me the power to believe in my intuition and my emotions.
Sustainable, ethical and environmentally friendly fashion is one of your passions, why do you love this topic?
Our world is at a crossroads, with very serious problems of climate change and waste. We have to change towards a circular economy. […] According to some parameters, fashion is the second most polluting industry after that of fossil fuels, a person's drinking water is used in two years to make only one T-shirt, that cannot be and that is why we have to change towards a sustainable and conscious fashion. We have to think about the packaging, fabrics, waste, where the products come from, the pollution of the oceans, reuse [clothing], buy directly from artisans or brands that follow sustainable practices; buy only what you need or really love; not to throw the clothes to the garbage, but to recycle it or to donate it; And why not rent clothes, which is a growing trend.
What is your mantra or philosophy of life?
Feel the fear and do it anyway.
