A few days ago, Mattel and Nickelodeon announced a new version of Dora the Explorer, which will be released between September and October.

However, the idea of a new Dora - a super skinny young woman in her preadolescent years, with long hair, and who lives in the big city - was not received with enthusiasm by the parents of the children who have turned this animated character in the queen of children's television.

Many feared that she would become a sexual image, like the Bratz dolls, and that she would become obsessed with boys, like Barbie.

To the parents' comfort, this week, the toy company and the television station issued a statement explaining that the new Dora will not replace the little heroine, but will be an interactive doll for girls between 5 and 8 years old, and that far from being a bad example, it will encourage girls to do positive things for their community.

According to this document, a new version of Dora was created with about 9 or 10 years old, which is more appropriate for girls between 5 and 8 years old. But, although she is older than the preschool character, the new Dora maintains her same values. "We take Dora's DNA - the love of adventure and learning, her drive and self-esteem - and apply it to [this new] doll," the statement explains, adding that she "allows girls to continue learning and growing with the character [still] after they've passed their preschool years.”

The new Dora is part of a line under the name Dora's Explorer Girls, which also includes four other dolls who are her best friends and a collection of educational books.

Note: there will be no television series about this Dora, but the girls will be able to connect the doll to their computer by means of a USB memory and thus access their virtual world, in which the new Dora and her friends will solve mysteries that will be related with community causes and care for the environment. Like the little bilingual heroine, the world of the preteen Dora will be full of Spanish words and phrases.

According to the companies, the reason why this new Dora was created "is to offer an alternative to mothers who want their daughters to continue being tiny for a little while longer."

So the parents of the little ones can rest easy, since there is Dora the explorer for a while.
