Through the 4 Days Sugar Free Challenge, nutrition education guru Guillermo Navarrete - known as Nutrillermo - tries to help thousands of people overcome the sugar addiction that exists today. "I dare say that sugar is the direct or indirect cause of half of modern diseases and conditions," said the expert in an interview with People en Español. "There are those who still deny that sugar is a drug, but science has already shown not only that it is, but that it is the most dangerous in our day for being legal and being in so many parts."

Who can do the challenge?

“Anyone who believes they cannot do without sugar and other processed carbohydrates such as, among others, bread, cereals and pasta. That's when you realize you have an addiction. If when thinking about these four days without sugar your head thinks of another sweetener to replace it, you may be addicted to the sweet taste. I encourage participants in the challenge to give up for four days those sweeteners that without many knowing, alter the gut microbiota in frequent and not so frequent consumers."

Which has benefits?

"Infinite. First the fact of being free [and] not needing it. There is nothing better than to stop being a slave to that sweet in the afternoons, to that dessert at meals, to that need for sweets that makes us not choose the food, but the food that chooses us and enslaves us. U. S. Once you are faced with the initial anxiety of giving up sugar, you understand that you don't need it. That [sugar] is the fuel of the brain is a great fallacy created by the sugar producers themselves.”

Who can participate in this challenge and what care must be taken into account?

"Those who suffer from reactive hypoglycemia should still do so because in most cases these hypoglycemias are the product of hyperglycemia. That is, by eating sugar and bread and raising their blood sugar too much, it then drops so drastically, so when they get used to eating less or not eating, everything improves. Also people with type 1 diabetes should adjust the insulin dose and in people with severe metabolic disorders should do so under the supervision of their specialist."

With what symptoms should the challenge be stopped?

“After four editions and more than 300,000 registered people, the only people who have abandoned [the challenge] are those who have not wanted to. Not everyone is ready or at the perfect time for that fight. Sometimes there are emotional or other reasons that prevent it, but the next time they try again. We always try to repeat it every four months."

What changes can we notice in these 4 days?

“Sometimes at first you feel a headache, tiredness, irritability, and the typical symptoms of withdrawal syndrome when you stop using any drug. After that there are numerous benefits and improvements [like] more energy, clearer thinking, better quality and quantity of sleep, migraines and joint pains go away or improve considerably, the skin also improves a lot, acne disappears and other dermatological problems [and] improves the resistance of our skin to the sun”.

Dr. Rodríguez is convinced that in the not too distant future [cutting sugar] will be the first indication that a multitude of specialists will give their patients when starting any treatment. "My mission [is] to help people achieve the health and weight they deserve … this will continue as long as I stay alive."
