A teenager celebrated her 15th birthday by wearing a rainbow sweater and holding a multi-colored meringue cake. After sharing the photo on social networks, she was expelled from her Christian school. "She was happy, she looked beautiful," Kayla Kenney's mother told NBC News. "Like any mom I took a picture of her blowing out the candles and shared it on my Facebook page," added Kimerly Alford. Soon after, Alford received a letter from the principal of Whitefield Academy Christian High School in Kentucky, where her daughter was in the ninth grade. Principal Bruce Jacobson's letter, shared by the channel, said the photo was at odds with the school's beliefs and philosophy.
Although it is a meteorological phenomenon and can have many meanings, the rainbow has been identified as a symbol of the LGBTQ community, which has adopted the multi-colored flag as the banner of its fight for equality. The letter the mother received informed her that her daughter would be immediately expelled by that publication on social networks. "I felt judged," says the mother. "She feels judged, it has been devastating for us."
The private school code of conduct details that students may be expelled for "sexual immorality" or "homosexual orientation." "She loves to laugh and dance, that's her," says the mother about the teenager, assuring that her daughter did not intend to make a declaration of gay pride, she simply likes rainbows and chose that theme for her birthday. "We teach our children [to wonder]: 'What would Jesus Christ do?' What would He do in this case?”Reflects the mother on the unfair and discriminatory behavior of the school.
