The story of Devin - who walked more than 14 miles to the LeBarón neighborhood, in La Mora, Sonora to ask for help for his relatives - has gone around the world for his enormous courage. According to multiple sources, the boy picked his brothers and cousins out of the brush as he sought help for the survivors.
"They started hitting the car … they started shooting at us fast," the boy told ABC News. The boy was traveling in the car with his mother Dawna Langford, 42, and his six brothers Kylie, 14, Trevor, 11, McKenzie, 9, Cody, 8, Jake, 6, Xander, 4, Rogan, 2, and Brixton, just nine months old.
Devin explained that the bullets hit the car's engine and that his mom tried to start but was unable to do so. Then she said her last words: "Drop down now." "She was trying to pray to the Lord and start the car," explained the minor. His mother and brothers Trevor and Rogan died in the shooting.
"They took us out of the car, pushed us to the ground and left," continued the boy in his story. Her sister Kylie was shot in the foot and baby Brixton was shot in the chest. "I walked until I couldn't carry it anymore," Devon said. "So I put it in a bush because they didn't hurt me or anything and they were bleeding badly so I wanted to hurry up."
It took Devin six hours to return to the place where he had left his little brothers. During the long and hard journey the boy only thought that the assassins would follow her and that at any moment they would catch up. "[I was just thinking] if there would be someone out there trying to shoot me or follow me and about my mother and my two brothers who had died," said the boy hero.
The incident has resonated internationally in a year that has broken records in the number of murders in Mexico, a country that has become the fifth most dangerous nation for children worldwide. According to the Mexican magazine Proceso, 796 children and adolescents have died in the country since President Manuel López Obrador assumed the presidency, which now exceeds Iraq and Syria in danger.
"To be honest, my son is a hero because he has given his life for his brothers and sisters," said David Langford, father of the minor to the aforementioned chain. "Not only have I lost my wife and two children, but now [it has to be added] having to really move my family without having a place to go."
"She was a good person," finished little Devin to remember his beloved mother Dawna. "[She was] a brave woman who tried to save her children."
