Drug trafficker Joaquín el Chapo Guzmán Loera, who is being tried in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, burst into tears on Thursday when his twin daughters paid a surprise visit to court.
El Chapo's wife, Emma Coronel, who has attended the trial since it began in November and has become one of his stars, gave the surprise when she appeared at the sight of this Thursday with the couple's daughters, Emaly and María, who had not been seen until now at his father's trial for drug trafficking.
"He was visibly crying, with red eyes and wiping his eyes," one of the Mexican's lawyer, Eduardo Balarezo, told the Daily News newspaper. "He last saw them in August."
The 7-year-old twins, the only ones allowed to visit him beyond their attorneys, are scheduled to see him Friday in Manhattan federal prison where he has been detained since his extradition to the United States in 2017.
As reported by various media, the girls sat on the bench of the public reserved for the family, from where they could see their father and follow the testimony of a Colombian police officer who testified about the seizure of drug shipments allegedly destined for the cartel. from Sinaloa.
The little ones were dressed the same, in white jackets and touched with a bow. "Adorable" is how one of the journalists following the trial described them.
Guzmán, 61, has pleaded not guilty to the dozen counts of serious drug-related crimes brought against him by the federal prosecution, who considers him the leader of a huge criminal organization that for decades flooded the American streets with drugs.
The imprisoned drug traffickers who have so far passed through the witness chair have described to the jury a complex criminal enterprise that was in charge of importing cocaine from Colombia to Mexico and then sending it to a network in the United States that distributed it throughout the country.
Among the methods he used to carry out his business was the bribery of authorities and violence, which was carried out by a veritable army of hitmen, according to witnesses.
Unfazed by these accusations, El Chapo's wife has attended practically every day of the trial, always impeccably dressed, and from time to time exchanging looks and gestures with the accused, who is prohibited from speaking or maintaining physical contact.
In a television interview with Telemundo last week, Coronel admitted that going to court every day has been exhausting.
"I think that is what any wife would do, to be next to her husband in difficult times, like what is happening right now," said the former beauty queen. "Obviously I want to see him, I want to be with him. I want to know what's going on."
He assured that El Chapo seems "thinner" since his extradition, but believes that "he remains positive."
Her dream, she noted, is to move to a "top secret" place after the trial and lead a quiet life. "I want to be fine and be somewhere in the world where we can live normal and peaceful lives," he said. "I don't have big dreams. I want to be happy and in peace”.
