The long wait for the sanctification of the Salvadoran archbishop Óscar Romero seems to have ended, since Pope Francis gave the go-ahead for the canonization of the revered priest.
In a statement released by the Vatican last Tuesday, the high pontiff accepted the miracles attributed to the Salvadoran martyr, despite the fact that the Catholic Church did not reveal the nature of these.
As revealed by The New York Times in a report on its online site, one of these miracles refers to the case of a woman who had a pregnancy with serious risks to her health and that of the baby, but inexplicably the two were cured. of his ailments.
In the same promulgation issued by the Vatican, the canonization of Pope Paul VI was also announced, who was the leader of the Catholic Church from 1963 until his death on August 6, 1978.
“It is not a coincidence that the two have been announced at the same time. They were both concerned with the poor and with social justice. [In addition] Pope Paul VI always supported Romero throughout his life,”journalist Andrea Tornielli, an expert on issues related to the Vatican, told the New York newspaper.
Monsignor Romero was recognized in his country for his strong stance on the defense of human rights, in addition to his criticism of the social injustice, murders and torture suffered by the citizens of his country during the civil war.
The beloved priest was assassinated on March 24, 1980 at the hands of a sniper member of the Salvadoran armed forces when he was giving mass. The impact of the firearm hit Romero right in his heart.
