The country's official newspaper, El Granma, indicated that Castro Díaz-Balart had been under medical care before attempting to kill him. "He had been treated by a group of doctors for several months due to a deep depressive state, he attempted his life on the morning of February 1," the newspaper reported, according to a note in El País.

El País indicated that Castro Díaz-Balart was the son of the communist leader's first marriage with Mirta Díaz Balart, a young Cuban from a prominent family in the country.
