Fidel Ángel Castro Díaz-Balart, Fidel Castro's eldest son committed suicide in Havana, Cuba on Thursday, February 1, 2018.
Official media in the country reported that the eldest son of the Cuban leader died "after attempting against his life," reports El Nuevo Herald. Castro Díaz-Balart, 68, suffered from depression and had been treated at the hospital, but was no longer being held, according to the Cuban press.
The country's official newspaper, El Granma, indicated that Castro Díaz-Balart had been under medical care before attempting to kill him. "He had been treated by a group of doctors for several months due to a deep depressive state, he attempted his life on the morning of February 1," the newspaper reported, according to a note in El País.
El País indicated that Castro Díaz-Balart was the son of the communist leader's first marriage with Mirta Díaz Balart, a young Cuban from a prominent family in the country.
Among the relevant data published by the Spanish newspaper of Fidel's son are that he was nicknamed "Fidelito" and was a nuclear engineer; the first to obtain that university degree in the Caribbean country. He obtained his education in the defunct Soviet Union, a socialist bloc that had ties to Cuba. Among other titles, he is Scientific Advisor to the Cuban Council of State and Vice President of the Cuban Academy of Sciences. Castro Díaz-Balart had three children with his Russian wife Olga Smirnova, Fidel Antonio, Mirta María and José Raúl exhibiting El País.
