Pope Francis and Donald Trump meet again amid controversy. After months ago the pair of heads of state met at the Vatican generating a wave of memes, now, both have expressed their opinions on the possibility of Jerusalem becoming the capital of Israel, and obviously, they are found.
On the one hand, the President of the United States could shortly announce his recognition of the historic city as the seat of the government of the State of Israel, leading to its reorganization.
On the other, the Argentine-born high pontiff said at his general audience on Wednesday at the Vatican that he is "extremely concerned" about recent events. In his speech he also declared Jerusalem as a sacred place for Christians, Jews and Muslims with "a special vocation for peace."
"I cannot remain silent about my deep concern regarding the situation that has arisen in recent days," said Jorge Mario Bergoglio. The pope - who recently visited Burma, another country engulfed in deep racial conflict - said that it is necessary to "keep the S tatu quo in the city" and respect the resolutions of the United Nations.
"I ask the Lord that your identity be preserved and strengthened for the benefit of the Holy Land, the Middle East and the entire world," continued the leader of the Catholic Church. "That prudence prevail to prevent new elements of tension from adding to a global context convulsed by so many cruel conflicts." Hopefully so.
