December 8 will be the last day that María Elena Salinas will be part of the cast of Univision after almost thirty-six years of hard work in that chain. In her place, the Colombian Ilia Calderón will take the baton of the emblematic evening news broadcast, Noticiero Univision, along with Jorge Ramos. What advice has the Mexican-American journalist given to Calderón? Salinas told us exclusively.

How did you take the news that Ilia would be your successor?

We were both waiting for us to be officially admitted that she was going to be the successor in order to speak. The bosses told us that we couldn't say anything, until we were finally able to speak. It was good news.

What do you think of Ilia?

I am very happy because Ilia is a great professional. She is not a novice because she has been in journalism for many years, first in Colombia and ten years at Univision. Actually, she is just changing hours, but I think she has also realized that this change in time involves other things, because I was not only giving the news, it is being very involved in the community, in all those campaigns that I have made in favor of the community.

How do you think people react?

Each one brings his own. I hope that people never want to compare us because everyone has their own. It would not be fair. So it bothers me a lot when people think and of course I feel flattered, but they say that nobody can replace me. As flattered as I am, that is not true and no one has to replace me. A person who comes to fill that position is not replacing me, she is creating her own legacy.

Have you advised her?

I don't have to give her any advice as a professional, but I do as a mom. And we do talk about that because her daughter is small and Ilia has not traveled much in recent years. She has had the opportunity to be with her daughter. We have talked about it and I told her that we are very concerned as a mother to leave our children because that can affect them, but it is something that also affects us because we feel guilty. That is something you have to take into account. I have advised him that from time to time you have to be able to say 'no'. Which is what I regret, that sometimes I didn't say 'no'.
