The Caribbean suffers a heavy blow again. Hurricane Maria made landfall this Wednesday in Puerto Rico, after hitting the islands of Martinique, Dominica and Guadalupe, among others.

Puerto Rican authorities confirmed that the strong winds and heavy rains of the cyclone, which came as a category 4 storm, have left the entire island without light and caused serious damage to different populations, including the capital San Juan.

"When we can go outside we will find our island destroyed," said the director of the state agency for emergency management and disaster administration, Abner Gómez. "He has destroyed everything in his path."

Although no fatalities have been reported so far, images from the island show streets flooded by the storm surge, damaged roofs, and fallen trees everywhere.

Maria, who is moving at a speed of about 12 miles per hour, entered the southeast of the country early in the day and is expected to leave the northwest.

After crossing Puerto Rico, the hurricane will touch the east of the Dominican Republic and head north, away from Haiti, Cuba and the east coast of the United States, according to predictions from the National Hurricane Center.

The messages of prayers, support and calls for help for the Puerto Rican people have not been long in coming, they have joined those extended to Mexico after the catastrophic earthquake on Tuesday.
