Suffolk County Police on Long Island, New York are investigating the deaths of two twins as young as 3 years old who drowned in the town of Melville on Wednesday.

According to a statement from the police homicide unit, at about 8:40 a.m. a woman called 911 to report that she had taken her son Nicholas Aurilia out of the pool at her home and that the boy was not breathing.

The woman also reported that her twin brother, Anthony Aurilia, had disappeared. The children apparently went out into the garden while their mother slept. When the police and paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the woman trying to revive the minor and immediately they went in search of the second child, whom they discovered in the pool water, already lifeless.

The police reportedly took several minutes to locate the boy's body as the water was cloudy and greenish from repairs being done to the home.

Staff from the Melville Fire Department volunteer team rushed the children to Plainview Hospital, where their death was officially pronounced. "The hospital worked feverishly to try to achieve another end, but it could not be," Andrea Mineo, spokeswoman for the Plainview hospital where the children were taken, told El Diario la Prensa.

"This is a horrible accident," Anu Lamba, a neighbor of the Aurilia, told the New York Daily News. The woman also explained that the family had recently moved to the neighborhood. “This is going to change the rest of their lives. I can't even imagine what they are going through”.

Lt. Kevin Beyrer said at a press conference that the deaths appear to have been "an accident," since the pool where the children drowned was operating according to the town's regulatory codes. The results of the autopsy of the little brothers are still awaited.
