Almost two and a half years have passed since the murder of a 16-year-old boy named Ryan Mangan, who shook public opinion upon learning that the teenager had been abandoned by his murderer, not without the latter taking a “selfie” together to his dying body.

Since then, little has changed in the Mangan family home in Pennsylvania. The boy's room - who was a high school student, worked at a McDonald's, and was learning to drive with his parents - have been left almost intact since his death in February 2015.

The tragic events occurred in the bedroom of the victim, who was shot at the hands of a friend, named Brandon Maxwell, also 16 years old.

After the shot, Maxwell took the infamous self-portrait along with the body of his friend, who was slowly dying, as his lungs were filling with blood.

Maxwell later shared the selfie with a friend via Snapchat and reportedly never asked for help for his friend.

"He was always by my side, wanting to help or just be there," George Mangan, Jr., father of the victim, told People. The troubled man recalled that his wife and son "were enthusiastic about water parks." His friends at school also remembered him as a very dear boy, who liked to play basketball, was brilliant and loved animals very much.

Now, the family has only memories and the bitterness of the trial of the teenager who murdered his son, and who they consider "unfair".

In May 2017, the defendant was sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of third-degree murder. Morton maintains that he and his friend were playing with a pistol, that he did not know it was loaded, and that he shot him without knowing that he had bullets. He said he had only taken the selfie to document what had happened and had plans to commit suicide later.

"It's like my son died again, for the second time," said Rebecca Mangan, mother of the victim, over the verdict. "I feel like this just isn't justice for him."

"No trial is fair without the victim being there to defend herself," exclaimed the sad woman. "Ryan deserved justice. He could have been saved."
