MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden, 35, is in a coma and fears for his life after he was hit on Wednesday while training by bike in Rimini, Italy.

The car that drove the 35-year-old American, who now competes in the Superbike championship, caused serious head and chest injuries, forcing doctors to induce him into a coma.

The representative of the 2006 MotoGP champion reported in a statement that he was transferred to the Maurizio Bufalini Hospital in the town of Cesena and remains in the hospital's intensive care unit.

“Members of Nicky's team and his fiancee are with him in the hospital. We would like to thank everyone for their kind wishes and messages of support and the emergency assistance and medical services,”he noted. "Once an official statement about Nicky's condition is released by Nicky's hospital or family, a new update will be released from the team."

For its part, the hospital center stressed in another statement that the pilot is in an "extremely critical" state and has suffered "serious brain damage."

The accident has generated deep concern in the world of motorcycling, which has turned into messages of good wishes for the champion. "We're all with you," Italian rider Valentino Rossi, a seven-time MotoGP champion and Hayden's direct rival in 2006, said on the networks. "Nicky is one of the best friends I've ever had [in races]."
