It was a summit meeting that was etched in memory by an unusual gesture that some interpreted as "ugly."
This is the moment when the then outgoing first lady Michelle Obama received at the entrance to the White House with her husband, Barack Obama, the incoming president, Donald Trump, and his wife Melania on the day of the inauguration of the new president on last January.
To the surprise of her hosts, Melania came up with a gift with which the outgoing first lady seemed not to know what to do. The cameras captured Michelle's gesture, which seemed to say "what is this."
Not at all, the former first lady explained now.
In an appearance at the American Institute of Architecture convention last Thursday in Orlando, FL, Michelle assured that her face did not reflect anything other than her attempt to contain the emotions of leaving what had been her home for eight years and in which their daughters had grown up.
"Just before the doors opened and we welcomed the new family, our daughters would go out the back door crying, saying goodbye to the staff," she told the audience, according to the Today (NBC) program. "I didn't want to be seen with tears because they would think they were because of the new president."
