In a video that is going around the world, a group of spectators on the Grand Canal in Venice recorded with their cell phones the agony of an African immigrant who drowned without intervening to prevent his death.
The images show the last strokes of the exhausted immigrant, who failed to awaken the mercy of the people who were watching him from boats that the man was struggling to reach.
Rather than succoring him, the video picks up taunts and insults on the unfortunate individual.
He is stupid. He wants to die”, one of them shouts in Italian, while he blurts out:“Africa!”.
Finally someone throws three life jackets at him, but the immigrant was too exhausted to reach them. Not a single person jumped into the water to help him.
Italian authorities have launched an investigation to determine if any crime, such as denial of relief, was committed in the dramatic death of the immigrant, who was identified as Pateh Sabally, 22.
Coming from The Gambia, one of the poorest African countries, a passport, a residence permit and an identity document issued by an Italian town were found in his pockets. Her family, divided between Germany and other European countries, is shocked by what happened, the Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia said.
Some observers have blamed this passivity on the growing anti-immigrant sentiment Western countries are experiencing in the face of the influx of foreigners in recent decades.
