Chef Floyd Cardoz has died of complications from the coronavirus, PEOPLE confirmed.

The Top Chef Masters winner was admitted to the hospital last Wednesday because he had a fever. At the time, he informed his followers via Instagram that he sought professional help as a precautionary measure. After a coronavirus test, the chef tested positive.

"Sincere apologies to everyone. Sorry I caused undue panic with my previous post. I was feeling feverish and as a precautionary measure, I was admitted to the hospital in New York,”she wrote with an image from the hospital. "I was really anxious about my state of health."

Cardoz died at Mountainside Medical Center in New Jersey, a spokesperson for that medical center confirmed to PEOPLE. He was 59 years old.

New York State has become the epicenter of the epidemic in the United States with the highest number of reported cases and a growing number of deaths already exceeding 200 people, according to Reuters.

According to Governor Andrew Cuomo, city hospitals face a shortage of essential materials to care for the growing wave of patients who continue to test positive for the coronavirus. He also assured that they are preparing to set up temporary hospitals where they will house new patients.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about half of coronavirus cases in this country are in New York, with more than 15,000 patients in need of care. Around 100 people have died so far this week. Most have been elderly people who are more susceptible to respiratory problems.

Currently, the city is under a strict curfew.
