This year, the statement by King Carlos Gustavo of Sweden surprised many, in a news item that went around the world: by his decision, his grandchildren were expelled from the royal house, except for the children of Princess Victoria, his heir to the throne.
This was officially stated by the Swedish crown: His Majesty the King's decision means that the children of Prince Charles Philip and Princess Sofia, as well as the children of Princess Magdalene and Mr. Christopher O'Neill no longer belong to the Royal House”.
With this initiative, the king wanted to clarify which people remained within the Royal House and who would carry out official tasks represented by the Head of State, although he also questioned the future of other monarchies.
During his recent Christmas speech, the monarch wanted to remember the reasons that led him to make this controversial decision: “Earlier this year I made the decision to define what is known as the royal house. The reason was to clarify which members of the royal family will act as official representatives of Sweden in the future. For me, it is a way of defining what the expectations are. I hope the decision is useful when my grandchildren have to carve out their own future.”
By not receiving support from the taxpayers' money, the children of the princes Carlos Felipe and Magdalena will be able to do what they want with their lives and, although they lose their status as members of royalty, the same does not happen with the place they occupy in the line of succession to the throne, which remains.
Of course, although they continue to be princes and princesses, the title will die with them without their future children being able to inherit it.
