Nativity scenes, Christmas posadas, Christmas novena, family gatherings and the typical food of each country are Latin American traditions that are in the hearts of those who live in the United States. At Christmas, it is a perfect time to unite each of them among those who have migrated to American soil.
The traditional posada kept by immigrants from the Aztec country, which is celebrated in Mexico and Spain, is to gather together with family and friends to knock on doors and “ask for an inn” singing Christmas carols. Upon arrival at a destination, tamales, Christmas punch and a piñata full of Mexican sweets are served.
Other Central American countries that celebrate the posada are El Salvador and Guatemala. The natives of these countries add fireworks and the gastronomy changes a bit, as with the traditional talmal chapín - different from the Mexican one. The tamale chapín is wrapped in a banana leaf.
The traditions of these countries include stealing the baby God from the manger. This then returns on February 2 at a new party.
The Colombians celebrate the Ninth Aguinaldo. This Colombian tradition revolves around the manger. Families gather to pray for nine days to Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus, singing Christmas carols, in some cases followed by a party - what is known as a dance novena.
The dishes that are shared form a large part of this tradition since typical delicacies such as custard, fritters and rice pudding are served at the start of the party.
"We in Chile make the pilgrimage of the Virgin throughout the month of December, we also meet to sing along with the births," the devoted woman of the Virgen del Carmen told Efe, whose image she proudly wears on a chain hanging on her chest.
Finally, another custom that other countries have, such as Chile, is to carry out the tradition of the pilgrim virgin. Every week, the virgin visits a different house and family members gather to sing Christmas carols, pray and share dishes.
