Eva Mendes graces the new cover of Women's Health and opens up to the magazine about raising a family with Ryan Gosling. The Cuban American actress, 45, admits that she and Gosling don't have all the answers as parents and learn as they go with daughters Amada Lee, turning 3 this month, and Esmeralda Amada, 4. “We're just starting to get out of survival mode,”she admits. "I'm starting to feel like a person again."

The star of films like Training Day and Girl in Progress admits having children “was the furthest thing” from her mind until she met her costar in The Place Beyond the Pines. The rest is history! Ryan Gosling happened. I mean, falling in love with him,”she says. “Then it made sense for me to have… not kids, but his kids. It was very specific to him.”

The actress feels thankful that she and Gosling, 38, have the support of their moms and sisters in raising their little ones. Raising her daughters is the number one priority for the fashion designer, who admits she feels “more ambitious in the home right now than I do in the workplace.”

Mendes tries not to let fame take a toll on their family life. “Not only are we in the industry, but the whole fame component is super scary when you try to raise your kids,” she tells Women's Health. “What I try to emphasize is that I don't let them see me put attention to how I dress. They've never seen me get ready for something; they've never seen me at work.”

She emphasizes that she wants her daughters not to think she is different from other moms because of her career in the limelight. "I'm just mom", she says. "And I'm more than happy to just be mom." Amada Lee and Esmeralda Amada teach her a lot about life, she concludes. “Every day is such a learning experience - they challenge you in so many ways. Like, I'm their mom. I have to rise up, and hopefully, most of the time I do, but sometimes it's definitely maddening.”
