In today's day and age, a strong eyebrow game is crucial. It can mean the difference between a good or a bad day. Or, at least it's a strong determining factor. Of course, the beauty masses are already armed with an array of eyebrow products galore to help sculpt arches into perfect (and identical) shapes. And now, there's a popular new treatment on the scene: microblading.

With stars like Lena Dunham flocking to this innovative eyebrow solution, many of us are wondering this: what the heck is microblading? And what's all the buzz about? Well, our clairvoyant selves (~ practically ~) read your minds and went straight to the source to get the scoop on what this game-changing brow solution is all about.

“Microblading is a manual technique of implanting pigment into the skin,” Klarissa Mesee, Permanent Makeup Artist at Sheila Bella Permanent Makeup in Beverly Hills, told HelloGiggles.

Now, this isn't the same thing as a permanent eyebrow tattoo. These ultra-fine, hairlike strokes are semi-permanent, and can last anywhere from 1 to 3 years with regular touchups. Also unlike your typical eyebrow tattoos, microblading tends to look extremely natural, to the point where you can hardly even tell that it's there.

As with any big-slash-semi-permanent decision, it's important to do your homework before committing

Especially when said decision is on your face. But Mesee, a trained pro, assures us that microblading is an awesome solution for folks with makeupallergies, hair issues, or who just want perfect brows!

“Think about how many times we get frustrated trying to achieve the perfect brow… and then having to match it. Then, of course, once you have them both on… you have to keep them on!” Mesee explained. There's also all the money we spend on brow products. It gets exhausting.”

If you're toying with the idea of microblading, here's what you'll want to know

If you can come in with your eyebrows perfectly shaped the way you want them to look forever and ever, come in like that. Otherwise, your technician will help guide you to the perfect shape. And once you're there, appointments can last from around 2 to 4 hours.

Next question: does it hurt?

“It's a tattoo! Of course there is a little discomfort involved,”Mesee dished, but adds that legit permanent makeup artists will treat your brows with numbing cream throughout the procedure.

Translation: if you've survived threading, plucking or waxing appointments in the past, you can probably deal.

Then, there's healing time and maintenance

Like with a tattoo, your microblading will need a little time to heal. Your brows will probably be a bit red and the brow color will appear darker at first, but both will fade. Just keep the site clean and applying healing balm as needed. And while the whole point of microblading is to have a more permanent solution, touchups may be necessary.

"Certain skin types (oily, larger pores) may require additional touch ups, but we always suggest coming in for an annual color boost to refresh your color," Mesee said. “It's a little like getting your hair done. Gotta keep up a little maintenance!”

Microblading sessions cost anywhere from about $ 400 to $ 1,000. Which does seem steep at first, until you factor in how much your spending on brow gels and pencils on a yearly basis. Also, figure in the time saved by not having to do your brows daily, and that sum doesn't seem all so bad.

And with fans like Lena Dunham, Bella Thorne, and Oprah to back it up, we'd have to say this nifty eyebrow treatment is ~ definitely ~ worth a shot.
