The policewoman who had sex while her three-year-old daughter was suffocated in a hot car finally received her sentence.
Cassie Barker, originally from Mississippi, was sentenced last Monday to 20 years in prison, as reported by CBS affiliate WLOX and the Biloxi Sun Herald. The 29-year-old woman pleaded guilty to the charges against her after the incident that cost her daughter's life on September 30, 2016. Although at the start of her trial she was charged with second-degree murder, her charges they were changed to involuntary manslaughter.
After hearing his sentence, Barker began to cry inconsolably and to apologize for the death of his daughter Cheyenne Hyer.
"I want to say that the only person to whom I owe an apology is my daughter because no one else was in her life except me," Barker said as reported by the Biloxi Sun Herald.
Barker also spoke about his daughter's father, Ryan Hyer, who spoke to the media about his daughter's tragic death. "The last time I spoke to him was in July [of 2016]," he said. "He doesn't even know what [my daughter's] favorite toys are."
According to details about the case revealed by People magazine on her online site, after her workday ended, the then Long Beach police officer went with her daughter to the home of Clark Ladner, her supervisor.
Barker left the little girl inside her patrol with the air conditioning on, since the temperature at that time averaged 100 degrees. The woman entered her supervisor's residence without noticing that the car's air system was not venting cold air.
After the ex-officer had sex with her boss, she fell asleep for several hours and when she returned to the car she found her daughter unconscious. The little girl would have arrived at a nearby hospital and her body temperature has reportedly reached 107 degrees.
