Three Brazilian Cannibals Accused Of Killing Women To Make Empanadas Go To Trial

The judgment of the so-called Brazilian 'cannibals' shakes. Jorge Beltrao Negromonte da Silveira, his wife, Isabel Pires, and his lover, Bruna Cristina Oliveira, are accused of killing women and making empanadas with the meat of their victims. Not only did they eat the empanadas, they also offered them to their neighbors, according to the New York Post.

Each was sentenced to several decades in prison for his chilling crimes. The trio were arrested in 2012 for killing at least three women, Brazilian news portal G1 reported. Popularly known as "the Garanhaus cannibals," the neighborhood where the crimes occurred, they were found guilty of the deaths of Alexandra Falcon Silva, 20, and Gisele Helena da Silva, 31. They also killed Jessica Camila da Silva, of 17 years.

They reportedly lured their victims by promising them jobs as babysitters or giving them religious advice before massacring them and eating their meat. Silveira's wife used part of human flesh to make typical empanadas or cakes called 'salgados' that they offered and sold to their neighbors. The remains of the murdered women were buried in their yard.

On Friday, during the trial, Silveira accused her lover of being a witch and of allegedly torturing him and his wife. Other reports indicate that they were part of a diabolical sect. The BBC reports that the trio committed their crimes as part of a purification ritual and that they found a book written by Silveira titled Revelations of a Schizophrenic, where he recounted that he heard voices and was obsessed with killing women.
