Dramatic scenes were lived between the night of this Tuesday and the noon of this Wednesday when dozens of people began to collapse and present symptoms of overdose in a Connecticut park.

The unusual occurrence occurred on New Haven Green in a neighboring meadow of historic Yale University. According to police reports from the city of New Haven, the first reports were received Tuesday night at 8:00 pm from people who were getting sick after smoking a synthetic marijuana cigarette.

From that moment on, and within approximately 24 hours, more than 70 people overdosed in that place and had to be transferred urgently. At least two of them were on the verge of death.

"[The paramedics] were jumping from patient to patient in the park," Dr. Sandy Bogucki, the city's director of medical services, told The New York Times. The official explained that the ambulances were not enough and that as soon as they left the patients in the emergency department, "they had to return immediately."

For his part, Anthony Campbell, New Haven Police Chief, stated that the victims had smoked cigarettes possibly made with K2 or Spice, a synthetic drug. The drug also caused an overdose in three other points in the city during the same period of time, including the Fair Haven and Westville neighborhoods.

Initially it was said that marijuana had possibly been adulterated with the opioid fentanyl, the same that apparently caused the overdose that singer Demi Lovato recently suffered and that cost singer Sin Prince. However, sources denied that version to CNN reporters.

Now authorities are investigating where the drug came from, while experts in New York are already analyzing samples of the drug.

For their part, New Haven police spokesmen confirmed the arrest of two men in connection with the overdoses. Both had K2 in their possession and are accused of drug possession.
