A Young Man Kills His Aunt For A Money Dispute

What seemed like a business conversation between aunt and nephew turned into a tragedy. It happened last Friday, when Edwin Ramírez Mejía met with his aunt Silvia Karina Castillo to talk about a business that both wanted to install in Guatemala.

The conversation turned into a tense discussion to the point that Edwin, apparently in a fit of anger, beheaded his aunt. After committing the crime, he kept his head in a plastic bag and threw it in a garbage can outside his Miami apartment.

According to information provided to local media by the executive assistant to the Hialeah police chief, Eddie Rodríguez, they were workers at the garbage company plant Waste Connection, located in that town, who discovered the body and head of Silvia on Monday, and they immediately called the authorities.

Rodríguez said Castillo left his Miami Beach home after the workday to meet his nephew in his apartment at 1035 SW Fourth St. in Miami. After leaving for that meeting, the woman was never heard from again, so his family reported his disappearance.

After finding the victim's remains at the Waste Management facility, Hialeah police contacted other departments in the region to find out if they had a missing person.

In identifying Castillo, authorities summoned family members to testify and noted discrepancies in Edwin's statement. There they began to investigate the young man, who in one of the interrogations recognized that he and his aunt lived in the United States illegally.

So far, the authorities still do not know how Edwin decapitated his aunt, nor the details of the dispute that supposedly motivated him to kill her.
