Charlie Peña, 18, became a viral phenomenon by sharing a photo on Twitter of her prom dress. And it is that the Chicana student showed pride in her roots by wearing a typical Mexican dress for her Cypress Falls High School party in Houston, Texas. The young woman spoke to Mitú, the multichannel network on YouTube, about the incredible reaction of support she received. Peña was not only proud of being Chicana, she also defended her sexual identity. Peña is considered part of the non-binary gender, which means that he does not identify himself with either the male or female gender.
“Being non-binary means that I don't identify with the male / female binary. I am fluid gender, which means that my gender identity varies over time, Peña told Mitú. “I don't fit within a certain set of pronouns either. She / they / he, I don't care. However, that does not mean that other people who identify as non-binary feel the same. It all depends on the person and what they feel comfortable with.”
She also made an impact with the dress she wore that she bought at a swap meet. "Many kids at my school scoff because they consider it 'ghetto' or too 'chunti'. I like to go because there is a lot to see and I honestly cannot find quality guaraches anywhere else,”he says of this market. “I remember walking around with my mom looking for a fruit stand and I saw the dress on a mannequin. I looked at my mom and said, "That's it, that's my dress." I tried it on and knew that it was. I bought it on the spot."
Some people advised him not to wear it, but he ignored it. “I find beauty in tradition. Although I love the idea of going all glamorous in a prom dress, it's not really me. I like to honor my culture at events like these. We are living in an era in which the political climate makes things difficult for Latinos,”added Mitú. "We are being stigmatized in the media by our president. We are people who deserve respect. " Apparently Peña was happy with his dress and the night of his class dance was fun. "We ended up having dinner at Taco Bell, which was more than good," he said.
