They Arrest The Father Of The Baby Who Died In The Eastern River Of New York

The father of the seven-month-old baby found dead in New York's East River was arrested in Thailand, local authorities reported during a press conference.

The man carried his son's body in a backpack before throwing the boy into the water near the Brooklyn Bridge.

James Currie, 37, was intercepted by authorities when he landed at Bangkok airport. Currie will return to New York next week to face a felony charge of covering up a corpse.

New York Chief Detective Dermont Shea said the boy's father had fled.

Currie was caught on surveillance video when he brought the boy to his home in the Bronx on Saturday around 1 p.m., and the boy appeared to be "fine," according to Shea.

Almost 24 hours later, Currie was seen leaving his apartment complex with a backpack covered with a blanket. He was then captured on surveillance video around 3:10 pm in Lower Manhattan carrying the backpack near the famous Brooklyn Bridge.

Tourists from Oklahoma made the disturbing discovery and called police around 4 p.m. Sunday. Close to the boy was the backpack, which was also taken as evidence.

"There won't be a good ending to this story," said Shea. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the mother."

The boy's mother, who has not yet been identified, called 911 around 9 p.m. Monday after Currie did not return her baby as part of her custody agreement, according to Shea. No previous reports on the child or partner were filed with the city's child services administration.

James Currie could face additional charges depending on the boy's autopsy results.
