This Monday night Manuel Antonio Noriega, the so-called "Strong Man of Panama" and dictator who marked the history of the Central American nation in his six long years of government, died at 83 years of age.
Noriega died at 11:00 pm local time at the Santo Tomás hospital in Panama City, a hospital employee confirmed to the New York Times.
The official causes of his death have not been confirmed, however, Noriega's daughters reported that their father had been admitted since March 7, after undergoing surgery for a benign brain tumor. Noriega, he told himself, had suffered from bleeding and complications after surgery.
After the news was revealed, the President of Panama, Juan Carlos Varela, turned to Twitter to refer to the death of the former dictator: “Death of Manuel A. Noriega closes a chapter in our history; his daughters and relatives deserve a funeral in peace, he said.
