Have you ever heard of oxybenzone? Probably not, but it is a very common ingredient in thousands of sunscreen creams. And what's wrong with that? Well, since 2015 it has been known to be a harmful chemical for the environment, more specifically for coral reefs.

Today it becomes news again because Hawaii has implemented new legislation by means of which it intends to prohibit the sale of sunscreens that contain this chemical from 2021. And that is according to a study by the scientific journal Journal Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology the exposure of the coral to oxybenzone damages its DNA, causes deformations and even ends up causing death.

In addition, it does not take much to discolor the coral and prevent its growth. According to that study, also referenced by the New York Times, a single drop of oxybenzone dissolved in 4.3 gallons of water is enough to be fatal.

“Our islands are a paradise surrounded by coral reefs, it is the perfect place to set an example for the rest of the world. This will make a huge difference in protecting our coral reefs, marine life, and people's health,”said Democratic Sen. Mike Gabbard to the Washington Post.

Although more and more brands are changing their formulas for others that are not a threat to the environment, do not forget to check the label of your sunscreen to make sure that it does not carry this ingredient.
