Authorities are investigating the murder of a Canadian woman and her American boyfriend who had disappeared in Belize since last week and were found dead on Monday.

As reported by the Toronto Sun newspaper, Belizean press has been reporting that Francesca Matus, 52, and her boyfriend Drew DeVoursney, 36, were victims of a violent robbery that ended her strangulation last week.

Their lifeless bodies were discovered in a sugarcane field not far from where they lived, and local authorities immediately launched an investigation into their murder. They also indicated that they believe that the couple had a large sum of money with them and the reason for their murder was theft.

Their bodies were found together in some bushes with duct tape on their wrists. The bodies were already beginning to decompose, so it follows that they had been there for several days.

On Friday, a friend of the couple named Joseph Milholen had gone to Matus's winter home in the Corozal district in order to take her to the Belize airport. Matus was supposed to travel to Toronto that day with her boyfriend.

Upon reaching them, Milholen did not find them, so he alerted the authorities about their disappearance. The lovers, who had only been out for a short time, had been last seen on Tuesday night at a popular bar called Scotty's Crocodile Cove.
