A teenager who died of starvation five months ago has deeply shook the city of Des Moines, Iowa, who wonders how the parents of the 16-year-old girl could have left her to starve.
Now, documents from the case that have just been opened in state court reveal that Natalie Finn was found wearing adult diapers and lying on the ground covered in feces and vomit, surrounded by animals in a messy and dirty house.
The girl lived with her adoptive mother, Nicole Finn, 42, along with two other adoptive brothers, 15 and 14, who had been seen begging for food a while ago in a store near her home.
The woman faces, among others, charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and child abuse linked to the death of the teenager. Her husband Joseph Finn, 46, is also in police custody in Polk County after his arrest in December.
According to various sources cited by local media, the girl was found unconscious on October 24 after a 911 distress call in West Des Moines. She was not breathing and was on the linoleum floor of her room, which was unfurnished, surrounded by excrement and, according to police sources, "had been like this for a long time."
Natalie subsequently passed away at a local hospital.
Different local media claim that social workers went to the Finns' home some time ago, but determined that the young woman was malnourished "because she did not want to eat." Other information claims that the inspectors found "a lot of food" in the family home in the fridge.
Likewise, it was reported that the husband did not live all the time in the family home and that he confessed that when the couple's two surviving children fled to ask for food from a nearby store, he helped cover the window through which they escaped by nailing a table..
