Enrique Acevedo, who announced that he is leaving the evening edition of the Univisión Newscast, will move to Washington DC to closely cover the presidency of Donald Trump.

The Mexican journalist, who spoke exclusively with People en Español about this new job step, caused a stir after sharing this morning a photo on networks with Ilia Calderón - with whom she presents the nightly newscast - in which she says goodbye to her audience.

Acevedo clarified that he will continue collaborating for that newscast and for the Univisión Newscast with Jorge Ramos and María Elena Salinas, but from Washington.

"It is a temporary farewell to the studio, not the newscast because the first 100 days of Donald Trump's presidency represent an additional effort for us as journalists to bring the information to our audience and do it from where it occurs," said Acevedo, who will live a few three months in the federal capital and he will travel to Miami to see his wife Florentina Romo. "She has been super supportive and very supportive of the idea of this temporary change."

Acevedo admits that Univision journalists' relationship with Trump has been strained, but he hopes to change that.

I think there was a very complicated relationship during the campaign. The perception during the campaign was that we were against the candidate and not that we just wanted - as with any other candidate - to ask him the questions based on what he was proposing,”he said.

“At some point we were banned. Univision journalists were not allowed to enter campaign events. There was little communication, but I think the relationship exists and that the White House understands that we have a commitment to our audience and that millions of Latinos in the United States have the right to listen to their president and to do it in the way they trust and that they continue with Univisión”, he added.

Acevedo noted that Jorge Ramos, who had a confrontation with Trump, supports his transfer to Washington.

“When I made the decision to leave the studio and fulfill this new task, the first person I approached was Jorge, who from the beginning has been someone very important in my career. We talked, I asked for his opinion and he agreed that it is an extraordinary opportunity,”he said. "He is very happy that I can go to Washington and has been someone who has been very supportive of the notion of getting there and having a greater presence in the White House."

Acevedo adds that he will miss the studio in Miami, but will continue to co-present with Calderón from a Univisión studio in the country's capital.

“We have been together for five years in the night edition. It has exceeded all our expectations in the personal relationship that we have built and the success that has been achieved with the night edition. Many nights we are the most watched newscast in Spanish in the entire country. Ilia, of course, will continue from Miami to head the newscast and I will try to strengthen our coverage from Washington, he said.
