Enrique Acevedo kicked off 2020 with a big announcement. The Univision anchor talked to People CHICA about becoming the first Latinx correspondent for the prestigious 60 Minutes news brand. “I will start a new project with 60 Minutes, which is the most-viewed and longest-running news show on television in the United States,” the award-winning Mexican American journalist, 41, says. "It's been on the air for 52 seasons, and in those 52 seasons this is the first time they will have a Latino correspondent."
Acevedo's new show, 60 in 6, will be part of the new Quibi streaming platform, founded by former Disney CEO and DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg. Quibi is set to launch April 6, and already has partnerships in the works with Guillermo del Toro and Steven Spielberg. "For the first time, 60 Minutes is launching a digital project to cater to an audience of a new generation that is no longer watching television," explains Acevedo.
Acevedo will continue to co-anchor the late edition of Noticiero Univision as he faces this new challenge in English. The new Quibi show will feature captivating stories like the ones on the original 60 Minutes, but in a more condensed format, with news capsules lasting about six minutes each. The topics will be conceived for an audience that prefers mobile devices, but with the same narrative and compelling storytelling that's always been a hallmark of 60 Minutes. Acevedo says the new venture will use the same camera crew and editors from the iconic CBS show and will add a new team of correspondents.
“I have to organize my schedule really well,” he says, thanking his wife, Florentina Romo, and his kids, 2-year-old Emilio and 3-month-old Patricio, for their blessing on this new adventure. "Without the support of my family or Univision," he says, "I couldn't embrace these new opportunities."
