For Luz Elena González, it was a very hard blow at the time to learn that her son Santiago, who is currently 11 years old, suffers from a cognitive disability.

“To be told that one of your children has a disability is a great loss, that loss is a mourning. I did not understand, it really is a very big loss,”said the renowned Mexican actress last week in an interview for the television program Intrusos.

The 44-year-old interpreter, who has participated in successful Televisa soap operas such as Until the money separates us (2009), A lucky family (2011) and Before dead Lichita (2015), received the harsh news of the diagnosis of her first-born when he was 8 years old.

“They told us about their subject when Santiago was 8 years old. For us, the first 8 years they told us 'he has something good with therapies or with' n 'amount of things, he may reach his normal child's level, his normal brain'. Then suddenly at 8 they tell us 'well no, notice that not always, he did not reach that maturity, that process and he has this theme,'”said the actress.

Due to this special situation in her life, the actress has had to deal many times with the intolerance and indifference of a society that does not end up including children like her son.

"I need society to be a little more humane, for real people to commit to making these children include them in a society, to help them, that instead of being judged because in a restaurant they started screaming because suddenly He had one there, I call them a short circuit, because they are intolerant of frustration, they are impatient … Instead of saying 'it is that the parents, he is a rude boy'. I would ask for tolerance, patience and not to judge. Don't judge because you don't know. They are also children that you see and are completely normal, "he asked.

But, could it be that your child has been bullied for his condition?

“A lot, yes at school because although schools here in Mexico tell you that they are inclusive, they do not help you as much to develop these children. These children still have the ability if they have a certain level of disability, if they have it in 6, raise it to 8, that is, have the ability to do more things. They do include them but they are forcing the other children to accept them, there is no culture of that love, of that tolerance, of that patience. We still have a long way to go. Not much is known about the subject either because they are not autistic children, they are not children with aspergers, they are children with cognitive disabilities at different levels,”explained the actress.

Although at first it was difficult to assimilate the news, the experience of having a child with a disability has meant "a great learning" for Luz Elena.

“I think that until now I can tell you that I can talk about it much more calmly, that I am very happy, I am happy, it has been a great learning experience. Within everything I have a wonderful son who is getting ahead. Every day is a surprise, every day is a blessing, every day every achievement he has for us means everything, the peace of mind that at some point in his life he will be independent, self-sufficient…”, he acknowledged.
